Violin and Piano sonatas 1 & 2

Charody’s musical language is broadly lyrical but with an edgy quality that suits the subject matter of both sonatas, and her ability confidently to wield different styles according to her expressive intent is a bonus on what is already a compelling musical journey.

Violin & Piano Sonata No. 2 ‘Limbo’ Op. 49

Behind the scenes videos from the recording of LIMBO made at Trixx Studios, Berlin on July 16 2022 recorded by Fabio Buemi.

LIMBO (2022) is set at Melbourne Park Hotel in 2021, a time when many refugees were detained indefinitely, some having been incarcerated by the Australian Government for up to 9 years. If we think of what it was like to be stuck inside for several months due to the pandemic, imagine what it would feel like after 9 years.

This sonata roller coasts through emotions of anger, frustration, boredom, fantasy & escape, exploding with one of the greatest weapons against oppression, hope.

LIMBO was composed specifically for Sonja Schebeck’s skills set where acrobatics plays an equal role in the presentation of the work.

Violin & Piano Sonata No. 1 ‘tale of the firebird’ Op. 38

TALE OF THE FIREBIRD (2018) was originally composed as a concerto for violin, fire & orchestra by Chloé Charody and created by Chloé Charody & Sonja Schebeck.

Tale of The Firebird is Charody’s own take on the famous mythological Slavic tale ‘The Firebird’ brought to fame by Stravinsky’s ballet of the same title.

In Charody’s version, a magical bird (The Firebird) is born with the power to keep the beauty of the world safe. When, however, a Raven (performed in this recording on viola by Yukari Aotani) discovers the magical bird, it captures it, stealing its magic and turning the world to grey. Stuck inside a cage, The Firebird weeps for the demise of humanity.

The Raven decides to challenge The Firebird to a duel, killing the bird after a fierce battle. However, magic will always triumph evil and in a firework-like explosion, The Firebird rises in a bed of fire, destroying The Raven and restoring the beauty of the world.

Tale of The Firebird was commissioned from Australia Council for the Arts in 2017. The work aims to fully integrates three art forms: modern circus, contemporary art-music & physical theatre, with a compelling narrative conveyed through movement and physicality.

In 2022, Charody adapted Tale of The Firebird into a sonata for violin & piano which will be released alongside LIMBO on April 1 2023.
